Major Disciplines


The main features of the seven major disciplines are as follows:

 

中文(榮譽)文學士    [課程結構]
同學須修讀48個中文系必修及選修科學分:必修科方面, 同學須修讀8門中文系必修科,共27學分。指導論文佔6學分,其餘每科3學分。必修科除指導論文外,須在二至三年級完成。 此外, 同學須修讀7門中文系選修科,每科3學分,共21學分。同學最少在五項中(古典文學、現當代文學、語言、寫作、文學批評與比較文學), 選擇三項,修讀其中一門學科,其餘任擇。選修科須在二至四年級完成。

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Contemporary English Studies    [programme structure]
The Contemporary English Studies Major students will take 48 credits, 33 of which (11 courses) are compulsory: 5 courses in the Applied Linguistics strand, 4 in the Literature strand, and 2 in the Language strand. 15 credits are discipline electives; they may be distributed between Applied Linguistics and Literary Studies (3+2 courses), or 9 of them may be distributed between Applied Linguistics and Literary Studies (1+2 courses) and the remaining 6 taken as an optional Independent Research Project (IRP) in their fourth year of study. During their second, third, or fourth year students are required to spend one semester on exchange in an English-speaking country.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Cultural Studies    [programme structure]
The Cultural Studies Major students are required to complete 48 credits: 24 credits in required courses and 24 credits in Programme Electives.  For the Elective, they will choose between 2 options: [Option 1] to take 24 credits of Programme Electives; while [Option 2] to take 12 credits from any Programme Electives AND 12 credits from a specified Area of Concentration.  The required courses in the Area of Concentration are: Education and Cultural Studies (Area A), Cultural Policy and Community (Area B), and Media Creativity (Area C).  Those who choose Option 2 will take 3 credits of the required course in their chosen Area of Concentration, and at least 3 credits from Directed Research Project or Internship.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History    [programme structure]
The History Major students are required to complete 48 credits of History courses: 21 credits in required courses and 27 credits in History electives. A total of 120 credits is required to graduate, which includes 51 credits in University requirements and 21 credits in free electives.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Philosophy    [programme structure]
The Philosophy Major consists of 9 required courses and either 7 elective courses (21 credits) or 5 electives (15 credits) in conjunction with a final year project (6 credits). The 9 required courses are deductive logic, 3 courses in the history of philosophy, 3 courses to be chosen from a list of core philosophy courses, and 2 courses in ethics and political philosophy. Regarding electives, the department has identified five elective profiles. Students are free to either specialize in a single profile or choose courses from multiple profiles. These profiles are: Aesthetics, Chinese Philosophy, Continental Philosophy, Ethics and Practical Philosophy, and Philosophy of Natural and Human Sciences.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Translation    [programme structure]
The Translation Major students are required to take a total of 48 credits of Translation courses, including 30 credits of required courses and 18 credits of elective courses. Of the compulsory courses, one is a 6-credit Translation Project. There are two categories of electives: (a) skills-based courses and (b) literary and cultural courses.

 

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Visual Studies    [programme structure]
The Visual Studies Major consists of 48 credits, distributed across Foundation courses and Programme Electives. The four required Foundation courses are: “Philosophy of the Visual Arts”, “Introduction to Chinese Art”, “Western Art from Romanticism to Modernism” and “Introduction to Film Studies.” Programme electives fall into four categories: (1) History of the Visual Arts & Aesthetics; (2) Service Learning; (3) Studio Courses; (4) Internships. Visual Studies majors must take 12 programme electives, totaling 36 credits, from categories 1-4. A minimum of 24 credits should be selected from categories 1 & 2 and between 3 and 12 credits from categories 3 & 4.
