Dr Grace Lau Yin-ping, Associate Professor of Department of Chinese was invited to give a public seminar today on “Cantonese Opera and the Witty Maids”, co-organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Lingnan University.

During the seminar, Dr Lau made use of “witty maids”, a common character in Cantonese opera, as a primer to introduce the performing and literary characteristics of Cantonese opera. Film clips of some Cantonese opera masterpieces including Hung-neung, The Matchmaker (1958) and Tong’s Affairs (1957) were also played to enhance the audience's interest in and understanding of this archaic art.

In July 2012, Hong Kong Trade Development Council has collaborated with major cultural and educational institutions in Hong Kong to co-organise a series of cultural events as part of the forthcoming Hong Kong Book Fair 2012 under the theme of "Cultural July".
