Postgraduate Studies Seminar: Conducting Studies on Sociocultural Change

Dr David Palmer, Associate Professor of Department of Sociology at The University of Hong Kong, was invited to Lingnan University to share his research experience in conducting studies on sociocultural change on 5 May.

Dr Palmer discussed his recent research projects about social and cultural change in Mainland China with focuses on the aspects of religion, civil society and global circulations. He also provided reflections on multidisciplinary research and the construction of social theory. In the sharing session, Dr Palmer gave postgraduate students some suggestions on doing qualitative research in contemporary China.

The seminar attracted not only Lingnan faculty members and students, but also scholars from City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong Institute of Education and Sun Yat-sen University. The seminar was the last seminar of the postgraduate studies seminar series of this semester.

During February to May 2016, the Division of Graduate Studies has organized one public lecture cum postgraduate seminar and 11 postgraduate studies seminars, with the aim to provide opportunities for postgraduate students to dialogue with scholars from different disciplines in research methodological issues. Invited speakers are senior research scholars not only from Lingnan but also overseas and other local universities, including London School of Economics and Political Science, National University of Singapore, National Taiwan University, The University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Institute of Education.
