Lingnan University's Faculty of Arts introduces new Interdisciplinary Major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy

The Faculty of Arts of Lingnan University will introduce a new Interdisciplinary Major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy starting from the 2016-17 academic year.  This will provide a more challenging interdisciplinary study for outstanding students of the Faculty of Arts.
 
Lingnan University’s Faculty of Arts has been well known for its excellent foundation in the teaching and research of Chinese literature, history and philosophy. The newly introduced Interdisciplinary Major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy integrates Lingnan’s strengths in related subjects, and provides students with the opportunity to conduct in-depth and interdisciplinary research and study on Chinese culture.
 
Students who wish to take the Interdisciplinary Major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy should be admitted to the Faculty of Arts through broad-based admission, and have attained Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above at the end of the first year of study, after which they can submit their applications to the Faculty. Students are required to complete courses from the three disciplines of Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy, as well as a year-long Directed Research Project.

Apart from the new Interdisciplinary Major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy, Lingnan University’s Faculty of Arts will introduce the Hybrid Admission System and the Student-designed Major in the 2016-17 academic year with the following details:
 
Hybrid Admission Model
 
To offer greater flexibility for students, the Faculty of Arts will implement a Hybrid Admission Model starting from the 2016 intake. Programme-based admission will be adopted in parallel with the current broad-based admission. A total of 8 choices of programmes will be offered for selection, as follows:
 

  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Chinese
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Contemporary English Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cultural Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Translation
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) * 

*   All students admitted via broad-based admission will be allowed to experience different Arts disciplines in Year 1 before deciding on the most suitable major programme. Students will select a major by the end of their first year of study. The main criteria in allocation will be a student’s preference, his or her overall academic performance and suitability for the Major.

Student-designed Major
 
Under the Student-designed Major scheme, students can design major study according to their own interest, take courses related to their planned research area, and complete a thematic research under the guidance of a supervisor. Students who design their own major disciplines will be allowed to put together a unique combination of courses, culminating in an independent research project. This will enable them to take charge of their own education and give them much more freedom than traditional majors do.
 
Students who join the Student-designed Major scheme should be admitted to the Faculty of Arts through broad-based admission, and have attained Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above at the end of the first year of study.
