International Symposium on Transnationalisation of Higher Education in East Asia

The Division of Graduate Studies at Lingnan University co-organised the International Symposium on Transnationalisation of Higher Education on 31 March with its international partners, namely the Global Academy of Liberal Arts at Bath Spa University in the UK, the Graduate School of Education at National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan, the Graduate School of Education at Peking University in China and the Research Institute for Higher Education at Hiroshima University in Japan. Scholars from eight countries or regions including Australia, Japan, Portugal, Singapore, UK, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and more than 50 faculty members and students joined the Symposium to discuss the important issues of transnationalisation of higher education in East Asia.

Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Comparative Policy, and Prof Huang Futao of Hiroshima University gave opening remarks. Four themes were discussed in the Symposium, namely student mobility in East Asia and the UK, internationalisation of higher education in China, faculty mobility in East Asia, and university governance and higher education policy.  In the Symposium, Prof Mok shared his recent research on students’ international and transnational learning experience and their career development in China. Dr Han Xiao, Research Assistant Professor at Lingnan University, critically examined the employment issue of transnational higher education graduates. Dr Jin Jiang, Research Assistant Professor at Lingnan University, discussed her recent study on China’s competition for global talent in higher education. Mr Ma Yin, PhD student at Lingnan University, presented his study on Chinese government scholarship recipients. The Symposium facilitated in-depth and varied discussions on transnationalisation of higher education.

The Launching Ceremony of the Master of Arts in International Higher Education and Management programme jointly offered by Lingnan University and other international partner institutions was also held during the event. The programme is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme targeting students who have an interest in international higher education, policy and governance, as well as management and leadership issues in a university setting. This inter-university collaboration is a great step in transnationalisation of higher education in East Asia, as it creates a platform for leading scholars to engage with students.

Students majoring in international higher education from Nottingham University of Ningbo China, as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students from Lingnan University also attended the Symposium and joined the discussion sessions with the speakers, which provided them with an opportunity to enrich their learning experience and develop their insights on opportunities within higher education, both international and transnational.
