Biographical Sketch
Prof Chan became President of Lingnan University of Hong Kong in September 2007. Prior to joining Lingnan University, he had served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 2001 to 2006.
Prof Chan received his BBA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his MBA, MA, and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. He started out his academic career as Assistant Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management of the Northwestern University (1982-86) and taught at the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California from 1986 to 1992, where he was named the Justin Dart Professor of Finance in 1990.
Prof Chan joined HKUST in 1992. He was appointed the Founding Dean of the HKUST Business School in 1993 and championed the significant developments of the School through 2000. In 1997, the School launched the first joint EMBA Program in Asia with the Kellogg School of Management of the Northwestern University, which was ranked the Number 1 EMBA program in the world by the Financial Times in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

At Lingnan, Prof. Chan has the vision to build a small, fully-residential institution which provides its students the best liberal arts education in Asia through a broad-based curriculum, an integrated living and learning environment, close faculty-student relationship as well as substantial enrichment programs such as international exchanges, internships and community services so that they can realize their full potential in life. With the generous donations for construction of the new hostels from the Hong Kong Jockey Club and other major supporters of the University, Lingnan is on track to be 100% residential in early 2013 when the University launches its new four-year undergraduate programs.
Prof Chan is active in professional and community services in Hong Kong. He is currently the chairman of the Social Welfare Advisory Committee, a member of the Public Service Commission, the Standing Committee on Judicial Salaries and Conditions of Service, the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, the Steering Committee on the Community Care Fund and the Supervisory Committee of the Tracker Fund of Hong Kong.
Prof Chan is active in professional and community services in Hong Kong.
