Ng Cheuk Lam, a Year 1 BA (Hons) History student, recently won the “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Chinese History Scholarship 2018 (中銀香港中史優異生獎學金)”.  The award ceremony was held on 23 November with a total of 10 awardees attending and each of them received a scholarship of HK$50,000.  The awardees come from seven universities in Hong Kong which have a history department or offer Chinese history programmes.  These students achieved excellent results in Chinese History in the 2018 DSE examination and have been nominated by their respective universities.

Cheuk Lam’s interests in Chinese history can be traced to the Republican period-related films and TV drama series he has watched when he was still a primary six or secondary one student.  His enthusiasm in modern Chinese history developed since then and he later decided to major in history at university and study more Chinese history courses.  In his free time, he would even take the initiative to read more history books to enhance his understanding of Chinese history.  He recalled what he would do when he felt frustrated studying the more difficult topics, ‘I would think about the historical events that I love best, relive the moments and the interests would come back to me.’

The “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Chinese History Scholarship” was launched by the Endeavour Education Centre Limited in 2016 and has been sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong). The annual event enters its third year and continues to encourage more young people to choose Chinese history in the public examination and to motivate students to work for excellent results in the DSE examination so that they can enter the history degree programmes or study Chinese history courses in university.
