About Esra

Esra joined Lingnan in August 2014 as an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy. She received her PhD in sociology from Stanford University and her BA in sociology and economics from Cornell University. Prior to joining Lingnan, while finishing her PhD, she worked as a National Poverty Fellow at the Stanford University Center on Poverty and Inequality.

Research Interests

Esra’s research interests include income and gender inequality, social stratification, distributive justice, executive pay, and attitudes. Her current research examines the attitudes of the general public toward high incomes and toward a gender pay gap. Most recently, she completed collecting data, using population-based survey experiments, in the United States, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, for her project funded by the Early Career Scheme of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
