MGSL 3001 Service Leadership Practicum

MGSL3001 Service Leadership Practicum (supported by Fung Foundation)

Learning Impacts and Showcases

1. Background

Seeking to uphold Lingnan University’s motto of “Education for Service”, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) and the Department of Management established the Service Leadership Summer Practicum in 2013, in order to nurture undergraduate students to become leaders with strong service orientation.

Service Leadership is vital nowadays in our community, where a great majority of economic activities take place in the service sector. Effective service provision depends on the personal character, skills, and caring disposition of the people involved in planning and delivering the services, including their willingness and ability to take the initiative and solve problems as they arise.

We are committed to working together with partner organizations to provide students with fruitful working opportunities that enable them to practice and develop essential service leadership qualities and abilities in diagnosing and meeting the needs of service recipients in the community.

We would like to give a special thanks to Fung Foundation for their generosity in subsidizing students' stipends for the course MGSL3001.

2. Programme Objectives

  • To prepare students to become future community leaders by nurturing their service leadership skills, commitment to personal and social responsibility, and insight into real-world challenges.

  • To provide a practical platform for students to demonstrate their potential for career advancement in a service-oriented economy.

  • To provide on-the-job coaching and mentoring for students, along with opportunities to diagnose and meet service needs through first-hand practical experiences.

  • To enable synergy between academic and local knowledge.

  • To foster service innovation for the benefit of the community.

3. Target Students

  • All undergraduate students, and priority will be given to those who have participated in the credit-bearing Service-Learning Project(s) organized by the Office of Service-Learning (OSL).

  • Committed and passionate about serving in governmental/ non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and social enterprises.
