Core Curriculum

From 2024-25 Year 1 Intake and 2026-27 Senior Year Intake

The Core Curriculum is made up of a Common Core and 5 Clusters. Students are required to take all 5 courses in the Common Core and a total of 4 courses from the Clusters, 1 from any 4 of the 5 Clusters. In addition to the 4 required Cluster courses, students are allowed to take more Cluster courses as free electives, if deemed appropriate.

Year 1 Intake students are assigned to take ‘CCC8011 Critical Thinking: Analysis and Argumentation’, ‘CCC8012 The Making of Hong Kong’ and ‘CCC8015 Generative Artificial Intelligence’ in the first year, and ‘CCC8013 The Process of Science’ and ‘CCC8014 China in World History’ in the second year. Senior Year Intake students are assigned to take ‘CCC8012 The Making of Hong Kong’ and ‘CCC8015 Generative Artificial Intelligence’ in the third year.

From 2018-19 to 2023-24 Year 1 Intake, and from 2019-20 to 2025-26 Senior Year Intake

The Core Curriculum is made up of a Common Core and 5 Clusters. Students are required to take all 4 courses in the Common Core and a total of 5 courses from the 5 Clusters (1 from each Cluster). From the 2021-22 academic year, in addition to the 5 required Cluster courses, students are allowed to take more Cluster courses as free electives, if deemed appropriate.  Up to the 2020-21 academic year, students are given the option to take, apart from the 15 required credits, up to 6 additional Cluster credits in the form of free electives.

Students are assigned to take ‘CCC8011 Critical Thinking: Analysis and Argumentation’ and ‘CCC8012 The Making of Hong Kong’ in the first year, and ‘CCC8013 The Process of Science’ and ‘CCC8014 China in World History’ in the second year (or the third year for those designated as Year 3 students upon admission).

2017-18 Intake or before and 2018-19 Senior Year Intake

The Core Curriculum is made up of a Common Core and 5 Clusters. All students of the 2017-18 Intake or before and 2018-19 Senior Year Intake are required to take all 4 courses in the Common Core and a total of 7 courses from the 5 Clusters (at least 1 from each Cluster). The number of Cluster courses a student can take is capped at 7, except for special cases with the approval of the Director of Core Curriculum and General Education to take more.

The Common Core courses ‘CCC8001 Logic and Critical Thinking’ and ‘CCC8002/ CCC8012 The Making of Hong Kong’ should be taken in the first year of studies and ‘CCC8003 Understanding Morality’ and ‘CCC8004 World History and Civilisations’ should be taken in the second year.  As regards the 7 courses to be taken from the 5 Clusters, students should take 2 courses (6 credits) in the first year and at least 1 course (3 credits) in each of their next three years of studies in order to ensure continuity between core and majors as well as seamless progression of student development.

From the 2021-22 academic year, in addition to the 7 required Cluster courses, student are allowed to take more Cluster courses as free electives, if deemed appropriate.
