Simon Fan's research interests span the theory and empirics of social economics, labor economics, development economics, and public economics. He has published three scholarly books and about fifty papers in refereed journals, including International Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Public Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics.
