Office of Service-Learning supports community partners to attend academic conference in Taiwan

Under the Jockey Club “We Care, We Serve & We Learn @ Tuen Mun” Programme, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) of Lingnan University supported two community partners to attend the “Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology Academic Conference” in Taiwan on 21 December 2017.  The theme of the academic conference was “Ideas and Practice of Service-Learning”, bringing novel ideas related to Service-Learning and community engagement to participants.

Keynote speeches and presentations of the conference explored different theories, methodologies and perspectives of Service-Learning.  It also served as a platform for Service-Learning stakeholders to share their knowledge and experience in promoting Service-Learning and community development.

“I am deeply impressed by the environmental protection projects in Taiwan.  Their education on environmental protection enhanced students’ awareness on reducing carbon footprint.  Unlike the situation in Hong Kong, the progress of environmental protection and recycling is far more advanced in Taiwan.  I think OSL of Lingnan University can lead Hong Kong students to participate in more environmental protection projects,” said Mr Frank Cheng from Senmily, one of the community partners who joined the conference.

“Although ‘social innovation’ often highlights innovative and creative means, but in essence its nature is still about community services.  These services may bring you different benefits like experience, sense of accomplishment and social network, but serving others sincerely and humbly is in itself a demonstration of an important value” said Ms Raven Ching of Yan Oi Tong Youth Space, another community partner.
