Science Unit promotes green living for local communities and students

On 12 October, LU’s Science Unit and Yan Oi Tong’s Tuen Mun Community Green Station (TMCGS) hosted an educational family day for Hong Kong Eng Clansman Association Wu Si Chong Memorial School students and their parents on Lingnan campus.

Prof Mark McGinley, Head of the Science Unit, and his students carried out an interesting variety of ingenious educational experiments on the theme Float and Sink. Visitors also learnt about TMCGS’ recycling work and took part in a natural lip balm workshop.

These activities not only enriched participants’ understanding and awareness of environmental arguments, but also helped strengthen parent-child relationships – in a fun way.

Another activity Toy Upcycling Workshop: Say NO to the culture of disposability, a collaboration between students from the Unit and the NGO Anew Toys, was organised on 10 October.

During the workshop, the students learned about waste management, plastic sorting and the recycling situation in Hong Kong from Paul Lai, Founder of Anew Toys, and Sally Wong, Community Coordinator, and then made crystal balls and toy capsule vending machines with recycled toys, glass jars, cardboard and plastic.
