Fu Tei Bookstore opens to provide space of culture and reading

After a year of preparation with the support from various parties, Lingnan University’s Fu Tei Bookstore is finally open, with the kick-off ceremony held on 15 February.

Many students, teachers and staff members participated in the ceremony to show their support. Mr Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University, Mr Sam Chien-man, Chairman of Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong), and Dr Sharon Chan Sin-yui, Visiting Senior Lecturer of Department of Sociology and Social Policy, were invited to deliver speeches.

“I am delighted to witness the opening of the Bookstore. I recall that a few months ago, I was meeting with the Students’ Union, and I was told about their plan of setting up this Bookstore. Lingnan University, as a liberal arts university, should have this kind of space of culture. I hope you can come here more often, ” said Mr Auyeung Pak-kuen.

President Cheng remarked, “This learning common is built to meet the study needs of our students, especially given our plan to renovate the library in the near future. This new space is to operate with the help of student volunteers. As a new venture, the bookstore will probably go through experiments to find out what will work best for its operation, but I am confident that it will grow and benefit the community with the dedication of our students.”

Fu Tei Bookstore is managed on a self-financing basis. Besides selling books, there is also a cafe for readers to enjoy leisure reading and culture. The Bookstore will launch different kinds of activities, such as exhibitions and talks.
