Lingnan University organised the Naming Ceremony of Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio today (3 April) in appreciation of Dr Jonathan Choi Koon-shum’s generous donation in setting up the “Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme”.

From the 2018/19 to 2021/22 academic years, the Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme will provide financial aids to full-time undergraduate students of Lingnan University who have financial difficulties in participating in Mainland and overseas exchange programmes.  The Scheme will also provide subsidies to full-time undergraduate students of the University to join internship programmes in companies recommended by Dr Jonathan Choi in Mainland and overseas cities.

The Naming Ceremony of Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio held today is honoured to have the presence of Dr Jonathan Choi as officiating guest.  The art studio is located on the third floor of New Academic Block at the Lingnan campus, which serves as a studio for Lingnan’s Artists-in-Residence and classroom for the Department of Visual Studies.  It will also be used as a venue for events such as internal and public arts workshops, seminars and exhibitions.

In his welcoming address, Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University expressed his sincere thanks to Dr Jonathan Choi for his generous donation.  “Dr Choi is a distinguished entrepreneur and a renowned philanthropist, who spares no effort in supporting education,” said Mr Auyeung.  Dr Choi became a member of the Lingnan family in 2011 when he was conferred Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences by the University.

Dr Jonathan Choi said in his address that in recent years Lingnan University has actively extended its network of collaborating institutions in Mainland and overseas, with the aim to offer more academic and cultural exchange opportunities to students.  The achievement of an exchange rate of over 80% is an evidence of the edge of Lingnan’s liberal arts education.  “The internship opportunities provided by Lingnan to its students are very diversified in terms of both location and job categories, covering many Mainland, Asian and overseas cities,” said Dr Choi.  He pointed out that internship opportunities are very important and practical for young people who will start their careers in a few years.  He hopes students benefitted by the Scheme can put their knowledge and skills into good use, and help their junior schoolmates as well as contribute to the betterment of the society in future.

In his note of thanks, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University pointed out that naming of an arts studio was chosen as the way to thank Dr Choi’s support because apart from his staunch support to education, Dr Choi has also contributed a lot to the promotion of cultural and arts development.  “Dr Choi has collaborated with a number of Mainland and overseas universities and made donations to establish Jonathan KS Choi cultural centers, galleries and museums, with the aim to facilitate exchange and cultural collaborations between China and overseas countries.  We hope to follow Dr Choi’s example and further promote arts development in Lingnan,” said President Cheng.
