Lingnan University held its 2018/19 Inauguration Ceremony on 22 August to mark the beginning of the new academic year.

Lingnan University held its 2018/19 Inauguration Ceremony on 22 August to mark the beginning of the new academic year and welcome hundreds of new students from all over the world.

 

Among the 600 freshmen who attended the ceremony to celebrate the beginning of their learning journey at Lingnan University, 11% of them are non-local degree seeking students. They come from 14 countries or regions including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Mainland China, India, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Taiwan, USA and Vietnam.

 

In his welcoming address, President Leonard K Cheng encouraged the newcomers to take advantage of the incredible richness of opportunities and resources at the Lingnan Community. “Learning at Lingnan goes far beyond the classrooms and textbooks. To make the most of your student life, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try new things and meet new people.” said President Cheng. He also introduced the University motto “Education for service” to the new students. “A person educated in the liberal arts should be able to respond to societal needs and contribute to the betterment of the community.” said President Cheng.

 

Lingnan University endeavours to provide an international learning environment which offers a diversified global learning experience. The university has signed agreements with institutions around the world, enabling over 80% of our students to go on exchange for a semester or participate in summer or winter programmes during their undergraduate study. At the same time, more than 200 exchange students from over 30 countries or regions from all corners of the world will come to Lingnan for exchange in the first semester of the 2018/19 academic year.

 

The 3-day New Student Orientation started on the same day showcased the University’s development and campus life through sharing sessions, group activities and video clips. Over 180 senior year Lingnan students were recruited to the University’s Peer Mentoring Programme, joining the ceremony to share their study and life experience at Lingnan and help freshmen adapt to the campus environment.
