Lingnan University hosts Annual Presidents’ Forum 2018 of the Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts Universities

The Annual Presidents’ Forum of the Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts Universities hosted by Lingnan University commenced on 15 November at Lingnan. The two-day forum, to be held annually, offered a good opportunity for alliance members to meet with each other to discuss matters of importance to the Alliance and to shape the forthcoming years’ agenda. It also provided a platform for member institutions to identify major issues and challenges with reference to international best practices in higher education, search for innovative approaches to liberal arts education given the current and future landscape in higher education in Asia and join efforts in addressing the new challenges and opportunities in liberal arts education. The main topics of discussions include programme development, entrepreneurship, research collaboration and civic engagement.

In his welcoming address, President Leonard K CHENG expressed his gratitude for having altogether 22 member institutions from Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and India to join the Alliance. President Cheng remarked that “Providing quality liberal arts education is our common mission and passion. We need to share information and insights, in particular best practices of what works and what does not.” He also shared with participants the important achievements made this year in the areas of student mobility, faculty exchange and research collaboration.

The Alliance was formed by 22 renowned liberal arts institutions in Asia including Lingnan University from Hong Kong, Duke Kunshan University, East China Normal University, The University of Nottingham Ningbo China, NYU Shanghai and Yuanpei College of Peking University from Mainland China, Dongguk University, Ewha Womans University, Kyung Hee University, Seoul National University, University of Seoul, Yeungnam University and Yonsei University from South Korea, Fu Jen Catholic University, National Chengchi University and Tunghai University from Taiwan, as well as International Christian University, Rikkyo University, Sophia University, The College of Arts and Sciences of The University of Tokyo, and Waseda University from Japan and Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts from India.
