Lingnan University co-hosts the 3rd International Young STEAM Maker Competition  and the 2nd Young STEM Grand Challenge

Lingnan University, National Institute of Education Sciences and Hong Kong STEM Education Alliance jointly organised “the 3rd International Young STEAM Maker Competition and the 2nd Young STEM Grand Challenge”

To promote the exchange and sharing of STEAM Maker education among primary and secondary school students in Mainland China and Hong Kong, and to cultivate cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills among students around the world in addition to provide teachers a platform for exchanging ideas, Lingnan University, National Institute of Education Sciences and Hong Kong STEM Education Alliance jointly organised “the 3rd International Young STEAM Maker Competition and the 2nd Young STEM Grand Challenge”. The closing ceremony was successfully held on 19 July 2019. The officiating guests attending the ceremony included Mr. Mao Tao, the Vice President of the National Institute of Education Sciences, Dr. Liu Jianfeng, Deputy Director General of the Education, Science and Technology Department, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Prof Tang Zhenmin, President of Guangdong Academy of Education and Mr. Lee Sha-lun, Sheridan, Principal Assistant Secretary (Curriculum Development), Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, etc. 

 

Prof Wei Xiangdong, professor of Department of Economics is the Chairman of the Organising Committee, he mentioned that this year’s finals attracted 104 participating teams with more than 400 students and teachers from the United States, Malaysia, Mainland China and Hong Kong. All participants must design and create in accordance with the concept of “Sustainable Development” according to the following six categories: smart living, smart environment, smart mobility, smart economy, smart government and smart people. Students who reached the finals participated in collaboration competitions on 16th and 17th July. With random grouping, students from different regions and schools collaborated with each other and applied knowledge of science and innovation in education, created stone-throwers, roller coasters and smart cars, etc.
 

The brand new feature of this competition was the first Excellent STEAM Teacher Competition in Hong Kong. Participating teachers were required to design a research topic based on the topic “sustainable development” to guide students in creating works as smart makers. Sixteen teachers who reached the finals on 17th July were required to present their research projects to professional judges in science and innovation education from Finland, the UK, the US, and Mainland China with follow-up Q&A sessions.

 

In the past two years, Lingnan University has successfully organised “Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Young STEAM Maker Competition.” This year, we enlarged the scale by inviting teams from overseas. In the future, we will keep scaling up the competition and promoting science and innovation education for teenagers. The competition was supported by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, Guangdong Academy of Education, IET Hong Kong, Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and more than ten supporting organizations from education and information technology sectors. The competition has become one of the most popular STEAM events in Hong Kong and Asia.
