About the Sustainable Impact Education Unconference

This Unconference will bring together educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and NGO partners to discuss sustainable impact through education. How can we strenghten impact-focused collaboration in Asia-Pacific and beyond? How can we better encourage and facilitate student-led projects? What role can the Sustainable Development Goals play in leveraging these projects? How can we design programs that empowers students to become creative problem-solvers?

Discuss these questions and more, and get inspired by meeting other changemakers who are passionate about teaching and learning for impact. During the 2 days at Lingnan University, participants will share best practices, discuss new initiatives, and develop collaborations for achieving greater impact through higher education.

What is an Unconference and why should you join?

An Unconference is an informal discussion format with a high degree of flexibility for participants to bring up relevant topics on the fly. Participants have focused conversations in small breakout sessions lead by knowledgeable moderators on themes that the participants decide on together. This format can rapidly establish connections, trigger purposeful discussions, and facilitate setting up concrete collaborations.

This Unconference will connect you with a community of peers who are passionate about achieving impact through higher education, and will allow you to learn from best practices, set up joint initiatives, and connect with old and new friends. It is especially pertinent for educators working on impact-focused projects in Asia-Pacific as there are lots of exciting initiatives in the region, but there is lots of room for strenghtening collaboration.

Key topics (participants will have plenty of opportunities to propose other topics to discuss)

1. Designing impactful learning opportunities

2. Guiding students to become creative problem-solvers

3. Collaboration in Asia-Pacific and beyond

4. Faculty development and institutional change

5. Leveraging SDG education ecosystem

6. Achieving impact through the Liberal Arts

Transportation

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
How to reach Lingnan University?
Lingnan University is located in Tuen Mun, a residential area in the New Territories of Hong Kong.  Nevertheless, Hong Kong has an extensive and reliable public transportation network, which includes railways, buses, minibusses, and taxis. We recommend getting an Octopus card, which is a rechargeable card sold at all MTR stations and is valid for payment for all means of transport except taxis and red minibusses.

From airport to Tuen Mun
You may take a red or green taxi to Lingnan University or your hotel from the Airport. It will take around 40 – 45 minutes and costs about HK$300 – 350 per journey (inclusive of bridge/tunnel fees). In addition, a fee of HK$5 (red taxi) / HK$4 (green taxi) will be charged per piece of luggage.
Otherwise, you could take Airport Express and interchange at the Tsing Yi Station, then transfer to Tung Chung Line towards Hong Kong, and interchange again at Nam Cheong. Then you could transfer to West Rail Line towards Tuen Mun.

Taxi
Red taxis operate in most areas of HK, except for Tung Chung Road and the south side of Lantau Island;
Green taxis serve the New Territories;
Blue taxis operate on Lantau Island.
(Taxi passengers using the Lantau Link from the airport or to the airport are required to pay an additional toll fare of HKD $30 irrespective of the direction of travel; additional fares are also charged for using toll tunnels.)

Railways
The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) offers train services that cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and New Territories. Its territory-wide commuter network has 7 lines, plus the West Rail, Light Rail, and East Rail, all of which are shown on the map below. Lingnan University is located near Siu Hong Station on the West Rail (the station is about a 10–15 minutes walk from campus or a few stops away by the K51 bus).
