Lately, the resignation wave faced by Hong Kong education sector has raised awareness in society. On December 1, Professor Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President of Lingnan University (LU), was invited as one of the keynote speakers at the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary School (HKAHSS)’s Annual General Meeting, sharing his insights on the theme, Colloquy on Education: Opportunities and Challenges, with school heads in the city. Bernard Chan, Convenor of the Non-official members of the Executive Council of HKSAR and former Council Chairman of LU, was another keynote speaker in the conference.

With over 380 local secondary school heads as members, HKAHSS aims at enhancing its members’ professional development and promoting understanding of education and related social issues in the city. This year’s conference unveiled the findings of a survey result on student withdrawal from school and teacher turnover.

Professor Mok raised concerns about the Hong Kong education system facing a significant loss of experienced teachers and principals leaving Hong Kong for migration. He suggested schools to work closely with the government and society to rebuild people’s trust and confidence in Hong Kong education, while more resources should be channelled to enhance educator and student well-being, especially their mental and social health under the impact of social unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Mok also shared how LU had made attempts to explore and develop closer collaborations with higher education institutions in the Greater Bay Area. He believes teaching professionals should understand the latest development of the Mainland, mentoring local young people to look into development opportunities from comparative and international perspectives.
