Lingnan University students introduce new railway projects to primary and secondary school students to enhance community cohesion

Lingnan University (LU) Institute of Policy Studies and MTR Corporation Limited (MTR Corporation) have jointly organized the"New Railway Projects Youth Ambassadors Programme" in 2022. Lingnan students are trained to serve as Youth Ambassadors and promote the MTR's new railway projects - Tung Chung Line Extension and Tuen Mun South Extension. It is hoped that through this program, it is possible to communicate closely with the community, so that the railway extension can more effectively meet the needs of the region, and at the same time, it also cultivates the leadership ability of college students, deepens their understanding of urban planning, establishes positive thinking, and contributes to the society. After completing the comprehensive training in January this year, the LU Youth Ambassadors and the MTR Corporation team held several online and offline sharing to introduce the latest information of the new railway projects to the primary and secondary schools and community centers in the district. Create a more harmonious good-neighborly relationship.

From January 2022, LU Youth Ambassadors and the MTR Corporation team have visited the A.D. & F.D. Of Pok Oi Hospital Mrs. Cheng Yam On School, Po Leung Kuk Hong Kong Taoist Association Yuen Yuen Primary School, Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School Of Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery, and Caritas Jockey Club Integrated Service For Young people - Tuen Mun, to share the latest information and features of the Tuen Mun South Extension Project for more than hundreds of primary and secondary school students and staff. During the sharing, the Youth Ambassador gave students a vivid explanation of the Tuen Mun South Extension from various perspectives, including the railway alignment, the location and features of the new station, the design concept of low-carbon and environmental protection, and the relocation of facilities in the district, as well as environmental protection measures during the project. Students can understand how to achieve a corresponding balance between urban development and environmental protection.

The atmosphere of the event was very lively. The students actively asked and responded to the questions. The MTR Corporation Team also actively exchanged opinions with the students. Some students who participated in the lecture believed that the sharing helped them from understand the future development of their community and enhanced their sense of belonging to the community, and expressed that they would share relevant information with their families, relatives and friends.

After several successful sharing, LU Youth Ambassadors said they have"a strong sense of achievement" and believed that they had truly served the community, and contributed to the development of the railway. “My personal speaking skills, leadership skills and event preparation ability has also been improved and these valuable experiences are of great benefit to my personal growth.”, said the LU Youth Ambassador. They also said that they are happy to see primary and secondary school students benefit from the sharing.

In line with the guidelines related to the epidemic, besides giving face-to-face sharing in person at schools and community centers, LU Youth Ambassadors can also flexibly coordinate with the school's arrangements to hold sharing through an online platform, providing students with a rich online learning experience, and enhancing the interactivity of the event with playful quiz games.
