Vice President visits University of Stavanger in Norway to foster collaboration

LU Vice-President Prof Joshua Mok Ka Ho recently visited the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Stavanger in Norway, an important LU student exchange and research partner since 2017.

Apart from furthering research and academic collaboration between the two universities, Prof Mok also participated in their Roundtable on Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation: The Asian and European Perspectives, discussing his recent research on the massification and privatisation of higher education in East Asia, critically examining the impact of rapid expansion in higher education on graduate employment and social mobility. This draws on sociological and political economy perspectives to analyse youth transition from education to work in East Asia.

Also participating in the Roundtable, and sharing their recent research findings and insights, were Dr Elena Menichelli, who presented a paper entitled"Workplace bullying in the Nordic academic work sector evaluated with the Job Demand-Resource model"; Prof Tatiana Aleksandrovna from the Faculty of Business and Professor of Entrepreneurship, who talked about her book on Entrepreneurial Universities' Regional Engagements, Prof Thomas Michael Sattich, speaking on sustainability and green energy transition, highlighting how the emergence of new geo-politics has significantly affected science policy and energy politics, and Prof Dian Liu who presented a paper on"Getting ahead while remaining vulnerable: career progression, gender, and empowerment of female academics in Norway".

Prof Mok and Prof Xiong Weiyan from LU met with Emanuela ledidia Kallesten, Research Advisor from Stavanger, and their research team and decided on joint applications for the Norwegian Research Council (NFR), and to organise another symposium on higher education and work in late October and early November 2022 to encourage closer collaboration in research.

Prof Mok also saw Ms Celine Nygaard from the International Office of the University of Stavanger to discuss further student exchanges, programme cooperation and research collaboration through their joint application to the UTFORSK programme.
