The STEAM Education and Research Centre (The STEAM Center) at Lingnan University (LU) launched the third phase of the “Lingnan Student Voluntary Tutoring Scheme: Online Tutoring for Rural Students in China”, helping 38 rural schools to establish an online teaching and learning platform, and providing 122 online teaching sessions to 3,000 rural students in Zhaoqing city, Guangdong Province.

With the support of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, LU has initiated a three-stage scheme since 2017/18 to improve education qualities in rural schools hence to narrow the gap between rural and urban education. Through the establishment of an online teaching and learning platform in The STEAM Center, we provide distance learning in remote rural areas of China, and at the same time, LU students participate in the voluntary tutoring scheme to contribute to the improvement of education in rural areas of China.

In the first two phases of the scheme, LU students from different grade levels and departments were recruited and trained as voluntary tutors to provide online teaching classes for over 600 students in 24 schools in rural areas of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. Members of the scheme found that online teaching and learning can improve the quality of education in remote rural areas of China, broaden the horizons of teachers and students in these areas, and promote exchanges and integration between teachers and students in the Mainland and Hong Kong. In addition, members found that the main problem in remote rural areas of China is the lack of teacher training and assessment standards. Therefore, in the third phase of the scheme, the training and assessment of rural teachers were added. 11 teacher seminars and 61 one-on-one teacher exchange sessions were organized for teachers in Zhaoqing to provide professional guidance and online exchange opportunities.
