On May 31, 2024, Lingnan University's STEAM Education and Research Centre, in collaboration with Fu Tai Elderly Home and the Hong Kong Old Age Nursing Association Limited, hosted another successful "STEAM 'Smart Elderly' Activity." This session focused on introducing smart agriculture technology to the residents.

Staff members from the STEAM Education and Research Centre led the elderly participants through a hands-on lesson using mung beans, soil, and other planting materials. Before beginning the activity, the staff engaged residents in a discussion about the current state of agriculture in Hong Kong, prompting them to consider the origins of their food.

This engaging and informative workshop provided a valuable opportunity for seniors to learn about cutting-edge agricultural practices while fostering a sense of connection to their local food system.

The workshop then progressed to a hands-on activity designed to engage the seniors in a simulated "little farmers" experience. The staff had thoughtfully prepared all the necessary materials, including fertile soil, refreshing water, packets of seeds, and easy-to-handle flower pots. With these provisions at their disposal, some seniors enthusiastically took to planting mung beans independently, while others welcomed the helping hand of the staff to assist them in this rewarding task.

To further broaden their understanding of agricultural practices, the seniors were introduced to the fascinating contrast between traditional farming methods and the innovative advancements of modern technology, specifically the concept of smart agriculture. The staff eloquently explained the numerous benefits of incorporating technology into agriculture, emphasizing its efficiency and sustainability. To illustrate this point, temperature sensors were provided to each participant, allowing them to observe firsthand the role technology plays in monitoring and optimizing growing conditions.

In closing, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the seniors who participated with such enthusiasm and made this technological exploration such a rewarding experience for everyone involved. The workshop not only introduced participants to the exciting possibilities of smart agriculture but also ignited their imaginations about how technology can enrich their lives in the future.

Inspired by the positive response, we are eager to organize more events like this, with the goal of sharing the concept of smart agriculture with a wider audience of seniors. We firmly believe that by seamlessly integrating technology into their daily routines, we can empower them to lead healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives.
