Minors

 

Minor in Sociology

The Minor in Sociology aims to develop students’ ability to examine and understand social issues with an analytical eye. The sociological perspective broadens students’ ability to critically evaluate and assess policies and social issues, and will be an asset to a wide range of careers including education, policy analysis, mass media, as well as business and commerce.

The Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences coordinates the offering of the Minor in Sociology.

Students other than those who Major in BSocSc in Sociology may qualify for a Minor in Sociology after successful completion of 15 credits (five courses) as detailed below:

  • Required Course (1 course, 3 credits)

   SOC2101          Introduction to Sociology*

  *Student who have taken SOC2101 Introduction to Sociology as part of their programme requirement (e.g. BSocSc non-             Sociology majors) are required to take another Sociology elective course as a substitute.

  • Elective Courses (4 courses, 12 credits)

   Students can choose any 4 courses with a course letter code "SOC" at 3000 to 4000 level

Minor in Smart Cities 

The Minor in Smart Cities provides interdisciplinary training to students across the university regarding the evolution of municipalities as they incorporate advanced technology into the fabric of their lives.  Students pursuing this Minor will have the chance to consider the cultural, economic, philosophical, psychological, sociological, and technical consequences of incorporating new information technology into every aspect of a city's existence.

The Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences coordinates the offering of this Minor.

Students who are not enrolled in the Concentration of Smart Cities and Digital Society under BSocSc Programme may qualify for a Minor in Smart Cities after successful completion of 15 credits (five course) as detailed below:

Minor in Smart Cities

 

 

Minor in Social Innovation and Social Studies (from 2022-23)

The aim of the Minor in Social Innovation and Social Studies is to equip students with the knowledge, perspective and sensitivity for an adequate understanding and innovative solution of social problems in Hong Kong, China and the world. Drawing upon the systematic studies of social issues in Sociology and Social Policy, the Minor purports to provide students with a broad conceptual and practical tool kit to access further studies and the entry level positions in a diverse array of careers and occupations (e.g. Social Enterprise, Commerce and Industry, Social Service, Civil Service, Healthcare, and Environmental Protection).

Students whose Major is in any programme other than BSocSc in Sociology may qualify for a Minor in Social Innovation and Social Studies after successful completion of 15 credits of courses as detailed below:
