Objective:

At the end of the workshop, students are able to:
1. To learn more about mindfulness and its benefits
2. To integrate mindfulness into hostel life.

Description:

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing attention in the present moment purposely and non-judgmentally. It helps people to reduce stress and worries, it also maximizes the enjoyment of meeting friends over a cup of coffee or simply having some solitude moments drinking coffee alone. The workshop shows you one of the easiest ways to practice mindfulness and how to integrate the practice in your daily life. If you want to know more about mindfulness or to understand how to practice mindfulness in the midst of your busy schedules, come and join us!

Freshman Writing Workshop

Objectives:

At the end of the workshop, students are able to:
1. Define "connotation" and "denotation”;
2. Organize their thoughs and create flow when writing an essay; and
3. Understand general parts of a paragraph and the difference between proofreading and editing.

Description:

The workshop will cover the following areas: 1. Week 1- Word choice:  Students will learn the definitions of "connotation" and "denotation”, identify words with similar definitions but different connotations, distinguish between positive (or neutral) and negative connotations of specific words, learn how to choose words to express a certain meaning, build vocabulary of synonyms.
2. Week 2- Outlines: Students will learn to organize their thoughts before writing an essay, and to create flow in their essays through unity and cohesion. The workshop covers how to outline an essay before writing as well as different techniques students can use to help create flow between their ideas.
3. Week 3- Writing the perfect paragraph:  Students will learn the general parts of a paragraph (topic sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence), then delve into the nuances of the introduction, body, and conclusion.
4. Week 4- Proofreading:  Students will learn the differences between proofreading and editing their writing, as well as a guided step by step process to checking over their work for errors.

Healthy Hostel Life with Exercise

Objective:

At the end of the activity, students will be able to:  

1. Describe how to eat healthily.
2. Practice simple exercise.
3. Enjoy healthy lifestyle in hostel. 

Description:

The whole activity is divided into 3 sections. In the first section, the speaker will talk about how to set up a healthy eating menu. The speaker will also introduce some basic notions and equations on healthy eating, such as how to calculate Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) when setting up one’s own eating menu. In the second section, the speaker will share some notions and personal experiences in doing weight training. Moreover, the speaker will talk about how to set up a training plan and some key points in performing weight training exercises. In the third section, the speaker will teach some simple exercises that residents can practice in their hostel rooms.

 Movie Night: Learning Science with Film (The Martian)

Objective:

At the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
1. Learn valuable life lessons through a movie;
2. improve English vocabulary and listening abilities; 
3. Provide insights into non-familiar cultures; and
4. Strengthen analytical and reflective skills through discussions. 

Description:

The Martian, the movie however Sci-fi it may sound, is a movie that can become reality very soon. Will multiple probes already have landed in Mars; we are just one step away from a relaunch mission from Mars back to earth. The whole movie can be summarized by the protagonist’s final words in the movie. “At some point, everything's gonna go south on you... everything's going to go south and you're going to say, this is it. This is how I end. Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... and you solve the next one... and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home.”

The protagonist a plant biologist accidentally left in Mars after being blown away by a dust storm. The whole movie revolves around his knowledge of previous and upcoming NASA missions and his knowledge about plants and how he become the first one to colonize the planet due to necessity. The movie emphasizes team spirit of the crew and how they are ready to make the ultimate sacrifice and the innovation which is made around them to allow them to bring back the Martian back home to Earth.

The movie run time will be 144 minutes, so interested students can stay back until 21:30 for a quick discussion after the end of the movie.

Objective:

At the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
1. Learn the idea of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong;
2. Have a basic understanding on the history of papercutting as a traditional craftsmanship; and
3.:learn basic techniques in Chinese papercutting such as hollowing out, stacking papers, filling colour and stippling.

Description:

This workshop gives students an opportunity to the history of papercutting as a traditional craftsmanship of Hong Kong and Chinese culture through practice and storytelling. Instructor will introduce the idea of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong. He will also demonstrate basic techniques in Chinese papercutting such as hollowing out, stacking papers, filling colour and stippling. At the end, students will create their own papercutting work with the facilitation of the instructor.

More Than Waste (I) – Making of Eco Enzyme and Green Living Workshop

Objectives:

Description:

We produce vast amount of different wastes in our daily life and only a small fraction ends up being recycled. In fact, many of this waste could have a new life and it is more than just meaningless trash. Fruit peel is one of the common domestic wastes and actually it is a very useful resource. In this workshop, we will make Eco Enzyme which can be used for body cleaning and household cleaning, and also learn more different environmental friendly ways to do cleaning at the hostel. Other useful tips will be offered as well to live a greener university life.
