"On the Basis of What?: Film Genre Categorization and History"
What do comedy, Asian-American, kaiju, and wenyi have in common? They are all terms used to describe film genres. Filmmakers, critics, and audiences all use film genre terminology to discuss cinema. But what is the foundation of genre and how have genres developed over time? This talk asks students to consider the definitions and histories of film genre and offers a preview of the FVA 3351 course Film Genre and Hollywood.
