LMS REVIEW

LMS

TLC has been conducting the LMS Review since the beginning of term, with both Canvas and Blackboard being piloted. These pilots have taken place in several courses including in a cross discipline undergraduate common core course with 351 students enrolled, an undergraduate course in Global Liberal Arts programme and a postgraduate course in the Faculty of Business. In total, over 400 students participated in the pilot.

A working group has also been formed comprising members from the Learning Innovation Community of Practice including academic staff and TLC staff members. In addition, academic staff were invited to pilot and/or test Blackboard and Canvas via email. A total of 11 two-hour long lunchtime test drive sessions with staff and students were conducted to help inform this LMS Review.

If you are still interested in giving further feedback and comments on the LMS Review, including your views on Moodle, please contact jameschong@ln.edu.hk or complete our survey.

The LMS test drive sessions attracted over 53 students and 7 teaching staff members and 11 administrative staff members tested either Blackboard and/or Canvas on various aspects such as file uploading, assignment creation/submission, online discussion and other new features such as automatic conversion of lecture notes to audio. The participants were asked to fill in the LMS evaluation survey at the end of their test. 71 completed responses were received.

CMALT

WANT TO GAIN RECOGNITION FOR YOUR TEACHING USING LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES?

As part of the “Lingnan Certified Educator” initiative, TLC is offering staff an opportunity to gain formal certification through the CMALT scheme (Certified Member of Association for Learning Technology (ALT), UK. The scheme enables people whose work involves learning technology to have their experience and capabilities certified by peers and to demonstrate that they are taking a committed approach to their professional development. The basis of the accreditation process is a portfolio which contains both evidence and reflection in relation to a number of key criteria.
If you are interested in becoming CMALT recognised please contact Dr. Hennie Yip for more information (hennieyip@ln.edu.hk)

ACCREDITED PROGRAMMES FOR STAFF

TLC are going through the final stages of gaining international accreditation for our new professional development programmes via SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association).

These new programmes have been designed to demonstrate a particular design ethos and approach (eg. Blended learning; Problem Based Learning) and aims to provide an authentic and experiential learning environment for teaching staff to ensure the appropriate and relevant balance between the theory, practice and applicability of learning and teaching approaches and methodologies.

STRATEGIC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (SPDP)

Recently TLC has reached out to each Faculty, LIFE and GS to initiate a process to allow us to seek feedback annually on how best TLC can support each area across the University and to discuss avenues of Professional Development. It is envisaged that this annual process will allow us to more effectively look for synergy across areas of support and to be able to plan our resources to best support all areas.

ACTING ON STUDENT FEEDBACK

As part of this process TLC will produce for relevant stakeholders the Teaching and Learning Data Planning Form, i.e. “TEACHING AND LEARNING DATA COMMENDATIONS AND ACTIONS PLANNING”. This form identifies from respective survey data areas of commendation and areas for potential improvement. It will also include some TLC recommended options for addressing the actions as well as seek input from Faculties/ Departments / Units / Programme Leaders on their approach and timeline.

The timing of the provision for the “TEACHING AND LEARNING DATA COMMENDATIONS AND ACTIONS PLANNING” form will align with the current timing of the associated survey instruments and be sent to Faculties / Departments / Units / Programme Leaders as per usual practice.

FORMING A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WORKING GROUP

In response to a noted downward trend in the area of “Learning Environment”, and the question seeking student feedback on, “Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the learning environment, including the learning resources such as the Library, IT access and study space and opportunities (e.g. student exchange programmes, hostel life, internships, ILP and community services) to engage with teachers and other students”, the President’s Group has tasked TLC to form a Working Group to review and improve the Learning Environment at Lingnan. If you have any feedback on this area please feel free to forward to the Chair of the WG
