What is TOTAL?

‘Transforming Outcomes Through Action Learning’ Teacher Experience (‘TOTAL Programme’)

The TOTAL is a highly recognised teaching and learning enhancement programme by both faculties and students from its inception in 2016/ 17 at Lingnan. With TLC’s facilitations, faculties appreciate the TOTAL programme enables them to reflect their teaching practices through structural collection of feedback on student learning progress, so as to better support student learning. Students commends that they become more aware of the teaching methods and know how they can achieve more during classes. Since the University’s full implementation of Outcome-based Approach to Teaching and Learning (OBATL) in 2017/18, the focus of the TOTAL has been revamped by TLC to assist new teachers to adapt to our liberal arts education environment, it provides our participating teachers with a helpful, caring and interactive environment/ community for them to systematically examine the student learning progress and then take appropriate action to enhance student learning. Lasting a semester, the process of the TOTAL is summarized as follows:

(1) Choose one Intended Learning Outcome (ILO) from your participating course(s), based your academic discretion;

(2) Collect the feedback on the student learning progress from your observations, your students and relevant assignment(s);

(3) Prepare and implement your action plan based on the student learning progress;

(4) Collect further feedback on the effectiveness of your action.


As token of encouragement to the participants’ enthusiasm in teaching enhancement, TLC has pleasure to offer them an one-off incentive of HK$4,000, payable upon the completion of the whole programme.
