English Language Enhancement (ELE) Curriculum

With a view to enhancing the English competency of undergraduate students, the ELE curriculum has been revamped for introduction to students admitted from the 2019-20 academic year.

Students Admitted from 2019-20

I.  Year 1 Intake
  Students are grouped under two streams according to their HKDSE results in English language (or equivalent) and they are required to complete four ELE courses as detailed below:

* Students are given the flexibility to take their first required ELE course, viz. LUE1001 for Group A students and LUE1002 for Group B students, in Second Term of Year 1. However, they are encouraged to take the respective courses in First Term of Year 1. For Group A students who take LUE1001 in Second Term of Year 1, they should take LUE1002 in First Term of Year 2.

@ In 2020-21 and 2021-22, the discipline-related professional communication course shall be taken in Term 2 of Year 3 or Term 1 of Year 4.

II. Students directly admitted to Year 2
  They are encouraged to start taking their required ELE course(s) in Year 2.
III. Senior Year Intake (those designated as Year 3 students upon admission)
  Students are granted 3 credits of English language course (normally LUE1001 University English I) among the credits granted for block credit transfer. They have to complete three ELE courses, viz. LUE1002 University English II, one ELE elective (may be taken from the term during which LUE1002 University English II is taken) and the discipline-related Professional Communication course.
Important Notes:
1. LUE1002 is taken by students who have fulfilled ONE of the following requirements:
  i) having completed LUE1001 OR
  ii) having obtained Level 4 or above in HKDSE English OR
  iii) having obtained credit transfer/exemption from LUE1001
2) Students could not take three or more ELE courses in one term.
Students Admitted in 2018-19 and before
I. Year 1 Intake
  Students are required to complete four English courses, i.e. LCE1010 English for Communication I, LCE1020 English for Communication II, LCE2010 English for Communication III and ENG2020 Varieties of English.
II. Senior Year Intake (those designated as Year 3 students upon admission)
  Under the block credit transfer framework, students are granted 3 credits of English language course (normally LCE1010 English for Communication I). Generally, students are required to complete three English courses, i.e. LCE1020 English for Communication II, LCE2010 English for Communication III and ENG2020 Varieties of English.

Courses on the ELE curriculum prior to the revamp would be phased out gradually. Students are expected to complete all the required ELE courses by 2019-20.
