To enhance the learning and teaching experiences of the Lingnanians, Lingnan University (LU) has recently established an off-campus learning hub with state-of-the-art educational resources at the Jao Tsung-I Academy (JTIA) in Mei Foo. An opening ceremony was held and officiated by Dr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, the Chairman of the MTR Corporation Limited and the former Council Chairman, President Leonard K Cheng and Mr Mike Y W Lai, the Chief Executive Officer of the JTIA.

In his welcoming speech, Prof Cheng emphasised that the setting up of the off-campus learning hub is one of the foci in the University Strategic Plan 2019-2025. “With more than a century of history, the Jao Tsung-I Academy boasts being one of the first ever projects sponsored by the SAR Government’s ‘Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’. Lingnan University, being a leading liberal arts university in Asia, has over 130 years of history too and shares the same commitments to the conservation and promotion of the Chinese heritage,” he said. The off-campus learning hub includes a multimedia classroom and two hostel blocks, which provide approximately 70 residential places for postgraduate students. Prof Cheng thanked JTIA for partnering with LU to cultivate a culturally enriching environment for faculty members and students in order to deliver meaningful classroom learning and residential education experiences.

Shortly after the opening ceremony, Dr Rex Auyeung presented a talk titled “From Transportation to Transformation: The Vision for Smart Commuting” which is one of the highlights of the Cities and Governance webinar series 2021. In his speech, Dr Auyeung shared with the distinguished guests how the MTR enriches commuters’ travel experience through best-in-class technologies and promotes the idea of Smart City with its Rail-plus-Property development model.

Last but not least, Vice-President Joshua Mok shared with the audience the news that MTR will engage LU with its Youth Ambassador Programme. In the near future, LU and MTR will work together to promote the concepts of Smart City and sustainable development. With students reaching out to and connecting with the community, this project is a true testimony to the Lingnan ideal of liberal art education.
