Our Majors

 

Under the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) Programme, we offer a total of nine Majors.

 

Majors

 

First and Senior Year (Year 3 Entry) are required to take up one Major. Successful Senior year students will be admitted to the third year and will normally complete their studies within two years. The normal duration for full-time First and Senior Year students is four and two years, respectively.

 

ECONOMICS (ECON)

offered by the Department of Economics

(For Year One and Year Three Entry)

  • Explores how to tackle dilemmas and difficult choices under limited resoruces
  • Studies the consequences of such choices by individuals, businesses, government, and society
  • Introduces students to using data to analyse the world and test theory against reality
GOVERNMENT AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (GOV)

offered by the Department of Government and International Affairs

(For Year One Entry and Year Three Entry)

  • Studies the shaping and sharing of power, including its uses, acquisition, and distribution in both domestic and international contexts
  • Covers Hong Kong and Chinese politics, Asian international relations and regional security, international political economy, international and comparative politics, public policy and governance, political theory and political behaviour
  • Cultivates students’ critical spirit which allows them to challenge traditional ideas about “who gets what, when and how” in a changing world
PSYCHOLOGY (PSY)

offered by the Department of Psychology

(For Year One Entry and Year Three Entry)

  • Provides students with essential knowledge and principles from different sub-fields of psychology, including developmental psychology, social psychology and cognitive psychology
  • Develops students’ ability to scientifically analyse human cognitive processes and behaviour
  • Prepares students for further studies, such as in psychology, teaching, and social work; and for employment especially those involving human relations, managerial and administrative occupations
Psychology with Counselling Psychology Concentration#

offered by the Department of Psychology

(For students majoring in Psychology, this Concentration is OPTIONAL for Year One entry, COMPULSORY for Year 3 Entry)

  • A growing mental-health service specialty within the field of applied psychology, concerned with the psycho-social, vocational and developmental aspects of people’s lives
  • Aims to enhance the quality of life and effectiveness of people’s functioning through handling mental health issues and facilitating human development and adjustment, both at individual and organisational levels
  • Prepares graduates for future postgraduate training in counselling-related professions and for entry-level positions in human service agencies (e.g. social work, school psychology, healthcare, human resources) where counselling skills are necessary
BUSINESS PSYCHOLOGY (BPSY)

offered by the Department of Psychology

(For Year Three Entry ONLY)

  • Equip students with broad knowledge and understanding of psychological principles
  • Nurture students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers who can tackle organisational issues through the use of psychological principles
  • Sharpen students’ awareness of the diversity and key challenges in modern work and business context
  • Provide students with the skills to conduct independent scientific research to understand issues occurred in business and organisational environment
SOCIOLOGY (SOC)*

offered by the Department of Sociology & Social Policy

(For Year One and Year Three Entry)

  • Dedicated to the understanding of the fundamental principles of social life and to the systematic study of social institutions and social transformations
  • Enables students to answer the “what”, “how” and “why” questions about human societies, past and present
  • Graduates will have a broad array of postgraduate opportunities and will be equipped to pursue employment opportunities in government, NGOs and the private sector
HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES MANAGEMENT (HSSM)

offered by the Department of Sociology & Social Policy & Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies

(For Year Three Entry, and for Year One starting from 2022/23 AY)

  • Introduces students to the latest theories and practices in health and social services
  • Facilitates students’ integration of theory and practice through experiential learning and internship opportunities
  • Equips students with essential knowledge and skills to take on a wide range of jobs related to social services and healthcare in both public and private sectors such as project officers, training officers, social services administrators and research officers
GLOBAL STUDIES

offered by the Department of Economics & Department of Government and International Affairs

(For Year Three Entry ONLY)

  • Focuses on transnational political-economic relations, regional and international economic and political interactions, conflicts and cooperation
  • Employs a multidisciplinary approach to interpret and understand global political-economic dynamics and transformations
  • Empowers students to think globally and to comprehend the current trends of global political-economic affairs
SOCIAL AND PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES (SPPS) ^

offered by the Department of Economics & the Department of Sociology & Social Policy

(For Year One and Year Three Entry)

  • Studies social and public policies, particularly as they relate to the rapid changes in local, regional and global environments
  • Studies social and economic issues such as ageing and population, gender, employment, housing, health and social welfare
  • Provides inter-disciplinary perspectives that will enhance students’ ability to analyse social and public policy issues and debates

 

#BSocSc students designated as Year 3 students upon admission in 2019-20 and after under the Major in Psychology are required to complete five counselling-related courses to declare the "Concentration in Counselling Psychology" or "Concentration in Industrial and Organisational (I-O) Psychology". First year students under this Major who have completed the five courses are qualified for declaring the Concentration.
