Greater Bay Area Collaborative Research

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), published by the Central Government in 2019, confirms Hong Kong’s strategic position in the GBA. Lingnan University is committed to making its contributions through a number of collaborations and new initiatives.

 

Roles of Public Research Universities in Hong Kong

In the HK$4.37 million project “Accelerating the Development of a Global Innovation and Technology Hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area: The Roles of Public Research Universities in Hong Kong” which is funded by the Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office of the HKSAR Government under the Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme, Lingnan is a collaborator with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as the lead institution. Prof Ka Ho MOK, our Vice-President, and his team is working closely with researchers of the collaboration to help strengthen the roles of public research universities in Hong Kong in this strategic development initiative.

 

New Joint Research Centres

Lingnan-SCUT Joint Research Centre for Greater Bay Area Social Policy and Governance

Responding to the exciting development opportunities that the GBA may present, Lingnan and the South China University of Technology (SCUT) bring together social scientists with a wide variety of disciplinary skills and experience to co-launch this Joint Centre. Under the four interconnected themes - Well-being and Quality of Life, Higher Education, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Economic & Social History, and Comparative Bay Area Studies, the Joint Centre serves as a platform for faculties, students, policy analysts and practitioners in the wider community to engage in research and KT projects on understanding the people in the 11 cities in the Area as they become more mobile in the region and what will then be the implications for social policy and governance.

 

Greater Bay Area

The first release of research findings by the Joint Centre in the project “Surveys on Youth and University Students’ Perceptions on Development Opportunities in the Greater Bay Area” was broadcast by the TVB and widely cited by media channels such as the Hong Kong Economic Journal, Ming Pao Daily, Sing Tao Daily, Bastille Post, THINK HK, Orange News, Wen Wei Po, Headline Daily and Hong Kong China News.

 

More Inter-University Research Centres being established

Lingnan-Wuyi Joint Centre for Ageing in Place

In timely response to ageing issues in the GBA, Lingnan and Wuyi University signed an Agreement of Collaboration for the establishment of this Centre to jointly conduct research on elderly policies in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and to provide recommendations to the authorities.

 

Lingnan-SYSU Greater Bay Area Research Institute for Insurance and Risk Management

This new centre in collaboration with Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has been set up under the Faculty of Business to share new research findings with the insurance and risk management industries and better promote innovation in insurance and risk management in the GBA. It is building a collaborative research platform for risk management, insurance and finance that focuses on (i) ambiguous beliefs and the demand for insurance; (ii) managerial overconfidence, risk management, and financial reporting in insurance; (iii) FinTech; (iv) systemic risk of banks and insurers; (v) corporate accessibility and stock price crash risk; (vi) intra-industry information transfer; (vii) bribes and managerial foreign experience, and (viii) the development of actuarial sciences.

 

Lingnan-GDUT Research Centre for eBusiness and Logistics

As a joint programme with Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT), this new initiative under Business Faculty’s Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies (HKIBS) aims to integrate the research capability of the two universities to leverage on the emerging development of eBusiness and logistics.  It serves as a platform for the creation of interdisciplinary knowledge on: (i) technology in logistics management under eBusiness and big data; (ii) electronic government and e-government service quality; (iii) cross border eCommerce and logistics; (iv) eBusiness adoption in Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs); (v) reverse logistics in eBusiness; and (vi) optimization of eBusiness logistics service, which can be transferred and applied to the industry.

 

Lingnan-SCUT Joint Research Centre for Management and Decision Sciences

In collaboration with the South China University of Technology (SCUT), this is a new joint research programme set up under Business Faculty’s HKIBS which will conduct research in the light of emerging new business models and challenges in management and operations in the GBA, especially in such areas as, (i) service operations; (ii) supply chain management; (iii) healthcare operations management; (iv) game theory for management and decision making; and (v) data driven decision making. It will work on interdisciplinary research projects to enhance the capacities of the two universities in research innovation and conducting cutting-edge and large-scale research projects.
