“I want to share my landscape with you” Series

 

                In the past, people used oral traditions, writing, painting, photography, and other methods to understand landscapes they had never seen before. They filled the unknown spaces with beautiful and hopeful imaginations. 

 

             Today, the emergence of social media has created various landscapes, including many images taken with filters. The gesture of “scrolling” the phone screen with one’s finger has become a unique way of viewing. 

 

             In the artwork, the landscape is formed by facial tracking technology. People like to find their best angle in front of the camera, such as taking selfies and selectively exposing themselves through sharing. This is one of the ways people connect with others through social media today. 

 

            Hiding oneself and merging with the landscape to present a perfect life leaves little room for imagination. This overly beautified life illusion is a common phenomenon in contemporary society.

 

 

 

I want to share my landscape with you 03––Portuguese Tiles

          Macau has a unique combination of Chinese and Western culture. Portuguese tiles are not only a feature of Macau but also one of its intangible cultural heritages. The landscape painting presented in the Portuguese tile style is combined with new media technology. It expands the traditional hand-painted method to today’s facial tracking technology. 

 

          The artist uses the technology to experiment different painting possibilities by other parts of the body beyond of hands. The Portuguese tile patterns on both sides of the work change with facial movements. The middle landscape painting forms a seascape when a participant moves his/her face, and it becomes a mountain scene when the face is still.

 

 

 

I want to share my landscape with you 04––A Glass Brick Wall

          A glass brick wall allows light to enter but does not provide a clear view of the surroundings. Besides sunlight and indoor lighting, screen light, which we are exposed to the most, carries a lot of information. It is difficult for us to be distinguished between true and false. Just like looking at things through a glass brick wall, we can only see the surface but not the essence of things.

 

Ms. LEI Ka Ieng 

 

          Lei Ka Ieng was born in Macau in 1987 and graduated from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts, Taiwan in 2016. Lee is currently a senior instructor of the Department of Arts and Design at the University of Macau. Her personal art practice focuses on video art, sound installation, and new media art. She has been invited to participate in numerous art exhibitions, including the EXiM 2022––Experimental Video Festival, 2020 Taiwan Biennial––Subzoology Collateral Exhibition, and 2020 ARTFEM Women Artists International Biennial of Macau. In addition, she was invited as one of the keynote speakers at the Perceptual Intellectual: 2020 Virtual Cloud Forum of Hong Kong-Macao Visual Art Biennale.
