Introduction

One of the most important artists of our era, Ryuichi Sakamoto has had a prolific career spanning four decades. His musical journey has taken him from techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer, and his music has evolved along with his life journey. Following the Fukushima disaster in 2011, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returned to music following his personal experience with cancer, a haunting awareness of life crises led to a resounding new masterpiece. Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA is an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man .

About Mr. Matthew Cheng

Cheng is a researcher at the Centre for Humanities Research at Lingnan University, and serves as a council member of the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. His awards include the 2nd Global Youth Chinese Literary Award, the Hong Kong Arts Development Award for Best Artist (Arts Criticism) and an award for Creative Writing in Chinese. He represented Hong Kong by joining the International Writing Program at The University of Iowa, and was the youngest representative in Hong Kong’s history. Cheng’s works cover poetry, prose, literary criticism, art criticism, film criticism, photography, and music. He combines teaching and writing, and writes film reviews every week. He experiments with cross-media creations, searching for meanings and spaces between vision and text, and between thinking and feeling.
