Refresher Course

For Students from diverse Background

For those students who did not major in economics and finance at the undergraduate level, we provide (at extra fees) pre-programme intensive summer refresher courses to cover four essential subjects, namely Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics & Statistics for Finance, and Financial Management.

About the Refresher Course

IBF002 Microeconomics
The main objectives of this course are to deepen students’ understanding of microeconomic theory beyond the introductory level and to enhance their techniques in analyzing theoretical and practical microeconomic problems in real life.

IBF003 Macroeconomics
Macroeconomics is the study of the economy as a whole. The goal of Macroeconomics is to explain the economic changes that affect many households, firms, and markets all at once. The economic changes to be studied include both the short run and the long run changes. To understand the economy, the following approach is used. First, Identify the important areas that we want to learn more about. The focus will be on three aspects: total output (and income), the price level, and resource employment (labor employment). Next, we measure them using (i) real GDP, (2) the CPI, and (3) the unemployment rate. Last, we develop Models (Theories) to explain why the macroeconomy performs the way it does, both in the short run and in the long run. A better understanding of changes in the overall economy can then help improve our economic policy and economic performance.

IBF005 Mathematics and Statistics for Finance
This course is designed to provide students with a greater depth of knowledge and understanding of mathematics used in International Banking and Finance. The course focuses on some basic studies on differential calculus, linear algebra, statistics and the computation of interest return on money. Students are expected, upon the completion of this course, to be equipped with knowledge in applying the techniques to most of the courses in the program.

IBF006 Financial Management
The course is an introduction to corporate finance and, in particular, financial decision making by firms and individuals. Financial management has been defined as the acquisition, management and financing of resources for firms. A basic knowledge of finance is important for all students majoring in business and this course is designed to fill that need. The course is also a pre-requisite for students who wish to later enroll in more advanced courses in finance.

As a computer science major, enrolling in a banking and finance-related master's degree is usually not possible. But Lingnan University's MIBF programme provided the opportunity to me. The programme provides four useful refresher courses to those students who do not have a relevant background for studying economics and finance at the graduate level. This eases the transition for an incoming student like me, who might otherwise struggle in some courses which feature unfamiliar material.

Other comments:

"Rich content, strong relevance, very useful, clear logic, I enjoy the lectures very much.”

“Thanks for the good attitude and understanding individual learning processes are different.”

“The refresher courses are very useful, especially for those who change their major. The courses will prove to be a good foundation for the students to go further in learning finance.”
