Corruption is a multidimensional complex problem, and a big barrier to successful development. Hong Kong is a rare example of a successful anti-corruption campaign, and other emerging economies can learn from it. These lessons can be supplemented by other institutions. This talk will focus on one such: a system of norms and their enforcement within the business community. We will examine how such an institution can function, how it interacts with formal legal apparatus of the state, and how much success we can realistically expect in different countries.
Prof Avinash Dixit is John J F Sherred '52 University Professor of Economics Emeritus at Princeton University. He is also a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Economics at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, and a Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford.
