Please note that specific requirements of admission vary among host institutions. For details, please refer to Table of Academic and Language Requirements.

Language Requirements

(a) English Language Requirement for International Exchange Programme (IEP)

Students applying for IEP must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based test), 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test). For information, please refer to TOEFL website and TOEFL Study Practical Guide.
  • A minimum IELTS (Academic Module) score of Band 6.0. For information, please refer to IELTS website and the following organizations in Hong Kong: British Council and IDP

As test dates are filled up quickly, it is advisable to register TOEFL and IELTS as soon as possible, even before the application for IEP opens. Your IEP application will not be considered if you are unable to provide your score reports before the submission deadline of TOEFL and IELTS.

(b) Chinese Language Requirement for Mainland Exchange Programme (MEP)

Students applying for MEP must have a good command of Chinese and Putonghua at the level of LCC 2010 Practical Chinese II or equivalent. Please refer to the LCC course descriptions.

Remarks: From 2017-18 intake, students who have attained the minimum IELTS threshold for their Majors upon admission should be recognised as having fulfilled the English language graduation requirement.  However, in case students take IELTS during their study period at Lingnan for such purposes as going on exchange and obtain IELTS scores lower than the threshold for their Majors, they have to retake IELTS at their own costs and attain the minimum threshold before they can graduate.  For details, please refer to English Language Requirements at the Registry‚Äôs website (http://www.ln.edu.hk/reg/tselceep.php).

Commitment to Internationalization

Students applying for Student Exchange Programmes are strongly recommended to contribute to internationalization on campus and serve as cultural ambassadors by (1) participating in the Buddies Scheme organized by OGE, and/or (2) living with non-local/incoming exchange students in student hostels for at least 1 term.  Your prior experience in these 2 schemes will be taken into consideration and give you extra credit for the assessment of your application for Student Exchange Programmes.
