Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Contemporary English Studies

BA in Contemporary English Studies Overview

Mastering the world language holistically

With two inter-related strands - Contemporary Literature in English and Language Studies - the BA (Hons) Contemporary English Studies emphasises language proficiency and a level of academic excellence that can lead on to further studies in the discipline.

English as the world language

Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Contemporary English Studies - connections between language and literature

Run by the Department of English under the Faculty of Arts, the degree programme combines literature and language studies. It develops students’ critical and cultural awareness, as well as their analytical ability and all-round proficiency in English. In doing so, it equips them with knowledge and skills for a wide range of career options and general opportunities in life.

Unlike other language programmes in Hong Kong, the programme views English Studies holistically, making connections between language and literature at every opportunity. It introduces students to, and prepares them for, English as a mode of thinking that encompasses literary, linguistic and practical aspects. This is done in the context of “World English”, not merely looking at things from British or North American perspectives.

Therefore, the courses focus on English literature with contemporary resonance, and the language as it is currently used in Hong Kong and around the world.
