A group of Lingnan University researchers led by Professor Joshua Mok attended and presented at the 16th Annual Conference of East Asia Social Policy Research Network (EASP) at National Taiwan University on 2-3 July 2019. The theme of the Conference was "East Asian Welfare Futures: between Productivism and Social Investment". The Conference attracted over 160 participants from Asia, Europe, North America, Australia and Africa.

Professor Mok organized a Panel examining issues related to the "Higher Education Expansion in East Asia: Impact on Labour Markets and Employment". Dr Jin Jiang and Dr Weiyan Xiong from the School of Graduate Studies joined the Panel and presented their recent research related to college earnings premium in China and Hong Kong and perceptions of employability of Chinese doctoral students from US universities. Professor Stefan Kühner from the Department of Sociology and Social Policy presented a paper examining “the limits of the productivist regime: capturing three decades of East Asian social policy developments with fuzzy sets”. Dr Padmore Adusei Amoah from the Asia Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies and Professor Mok from School of Graduate Studies addressed the conference participants with a topic related to achieving the age-friendly city agenda through examining an interventional study in the Islands District in Hong Kong. The presentations were warmly received by the conference participants with productive discussions.

During the Conference, the Lingnan University research team also developed stronger links with social policy experts from different parts of the world. In particular, research links between Lingnan University and research partners from National Taiwan University and Soochow University in Taiwan were strengthened. Concluding the Conference, which was held with great success, the Executive Committee of EASP also announced the 17th Annual Conference of the EASP will be held at Lingnan University in June 2020. "Lingnan University is honored to host the Conference next year and it will provide a great platform to engage social policy experts from all around the world to discuss and debate issues related to social policy and social development against the rapid social change context,” remarked Professor Mok, Vice President of Lingnan University.
