In November 2023, Lingnan University played a pivotal role in two major events, the QS Higher Education Pre-Summit APAC 2023 and the QS Higher Education APAC Summit 2023. These gatherings, addressing the future of liberal arts education and technological impacts, brought together leading academics and administrators.

 

The Pre-Summit APAC 2023 was held on Lingnan's campus, attracting 450 attendees. The summit discussed the evolution of arts and humanities disciplines and the implications of these changes for universities, students, and teaching methods. Lingnan's President S. Joe Qin emphasized the need for progressive institutions to embrace change and foster partnerships to stay abreast in the digital era.

 

The main event, the QS Higher Education APAC Summit 2023, took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 7-9 November 2023. Over 1,000 academics, government officials, and representatives from businesses and universities attended. The summit covered a wide range of topics, from the future of work and talent development to the roles of universities and industry partners in developing sustainable cities.

 

Lingnan's President S. Joe Qin, participated in the opening panel, discussing the unique challenges of Asia's higher education institutions and the need for adaptation in a rapidly changing environment. Vice-President Professor Joshua Mok also contributed to a panel discussion on the dynamics of international student enrollment.

 

Lingnan University was awarded the highest honor, the QS 5 Stars Plus rating, at a presentation ceremony held during the Gala Dinner. This rating evaluates performance in categories such as research, teaching, innovation, inclusiveness, and environmental impact. Lingnan was specifically lauded for its robust internationalization, the employability of its graduates, and its commitment to delivering an exceptional academic experience.

 

Lingnan University has consistently secured a position among the top three universities worldwide for "Quality Education". It also ranks among the top 100 universities in East Asia in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.

 

The Summit's conclusion confirmed that Lingnan will co-host the QS Higher Education APAC Summit 2024 and host the Post-Summit. Lingnan also sponsored a dinner to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the QS World University Rankings. "These interactions are crucial for exchanging ideas, promoting collaborations, and ultimately driving innovations in higher education," President S. Joe Qin said.

The School of Graduate Studies at Lingnan University recently inaugurated the Conference for Higher Education Research (CHER) – Hong Kong 2023. This year's theme is "Education for Sustainability: Navigating the Changing Landscape of Higher Education." Over 180 participants from 12 locations worldwide, including scholars from Australia, the United States, Finland, England, Turkey, Singapore, Kazakhstan, and China, registered for this two-day conference.

 

The conference's objective is to facilitate a global discussion among scholars, policymakers, and practitioners about the latest trends, challenges, and best practices in promoting sustainability education in higher education.

 

Lingnan University President Prof S. Joe Qin delivered an opening address emphasizing the importance of sustainability education and the role of higher education institutions in promoting sustainable development. He highlighted the necessity of collaboration among universities, policymakers, and other stakeholders to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The first day of the conference was marked by inspiring keynote addresses and panel discussions on various aspects related to education for sustainability. Attendees engaged in profound discussions and learned from leading experts in the field.

 

Another conference highlight was the announcement of new partner institutions for the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP). New partners include Peking University, Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, and National Chengchi University. Lingnan University Vice-President Prof Mok Ka Ho, also the co-director of APHERP, welcomed the new partner institutions. The partnership aims to encourage collaboration among higher education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region to advance research and innovation in higher education.

 

The conference also featured a roundtable discussion on 'Education for Sustainability: East-West Dialogues,' moderated by Prof Macfarlane Bruce John from the Education University of Hong Kong. Notable contributors included Prof Angela HOU Yung-chi from National Chengchi University, Prof Tristan McCowan from University College London, Dr LI Kam-cheong from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Ms Antonia Yeung Yu-hung from Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, and Prof Paulina Wong Pui-yun from Lingnan University.

Lingnan University to join Shenzhen Virtual University Park

On 14 November 14 2023, Lingnan University and the Shenzhen Technology and Innovation Commission entered into an agreement, making Lingnan University an official member of the Shenzhen Virtual University Park. The announcement was made at the 2023 Assembly of Shenzhen Virtual University Park.

 

With this partnership, Lingnan University and Shenzhen Technology and Innovation Commission will collaborate to advance academics, scientific research, and industry development. Lingnan University also aims to boost its collaborative relationships with Shenzhen's educational and scientific research institutions, as well as enterprises.

 

In line with this agreement, Lingnan University plans to establish the Lingnan University Shenzhen Research Institute within the Park. The institute will act as a comprehensive platform for Lingnan University, aiding in scientific research, academic exchanges, talent cultivation, enterprise incubation, and knowledge transfer.

 

Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President of Lingnan, spoke about the agreement, stating that the institute would leverage Lingnan University's strengths in business studies, big data, artificial intelligence, and zero-emission sustainability. This will enhance the university's abilities to serve industries and enterprises, providing crucial support for the Greater Bay Area, and bolstering the University's innovation.

 

Shenzhen Virtual University Park, a strategic initiative by the Shenzhen Municipal Government established in 1999, currently houses 68 prestigious universities from around the globe, including six from Hong Kong, promoting development in high-tech sectors.

Between 14 and 16 September, a delegation from Lingnan University led by President Prof Joe Qin visited several universities in Shenyang and Beijing to strengthen academic relations and collaborations.

 

In Shenyang, Prof Qin attended Northeastern University's anniversary celebrations, where he signed two collaboration agreements and delivered a keynote speech at the 2023 Global University Presidents’ Forum. Lingnan University renewed its student exchange agreement with Northeastern University and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Northeastern University’s State Key Laboratory of Synthetical Automation for Process Industries. The MOU was signed on behalf of Lingnan University by the LEO Dr David P. Chan Institute of Data Science and the Science Unit at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

In Beijing, Prof Qin and his delegation met with Prof Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University, and Prof Guo Jianhua, President of Beijing Technology and Business University. Discussions with Prof Gong Qihuang focused on strengthening collaborations in the fields of data science, artificial intelligence, and humanities, and promoting faculty and student exchanges. Prof Qin also visited Yuanpei College of Peking University, where they agreed to co-host international forums, organize innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, and launch a series of workshops.

Prof Qin also had a meaningful exchange with President Prof Guo Jianhua and Vice-President Professor Liu Minhua of the Beijing Technology and Business University. They discussed research partnerships, faculty and student exchange, and talent cultivation.

 

Finally, Prof Qin delivered a keynote speech at the 2023 Chinese and Foreign University Presidents' Forum titled "135 Years of Internationalised Education at Lingnan University". He shared insights into Lingnan University's 100-year history, the characteristics of a liberal arts education, and the university's vision in an era shaped by artificial intelligence. These visits have solidified Lingnan University's relationships with these prominent universities, paving the way for future collaborations.
