Cross-Cultural Integration

Programmes to Facilitate Language Learning and Cross-Cultural Appreciation through Residential Life

Our hostels house exchange, non-local degree-seeking and local students, it creates a unique platform where diverse cultures collide.  Students from all over the world can explore and appreciate different cultures through their everyday living and social activities.  This international environment provides a great opportunity for students to be exposed to different languages, facilitating their language learning.

To further encourage cross-cultural integration, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), the ten Warden’s Offices and their respective offices will organise language enhancement programmes and culture appreciation activities.  These initiatives aim to promote a deeper appreciation of diversity and foster cross-cultural integration among students.

Support for Non-local Students

  • Orientation and Activities

A good support network is crucial for new non-local undergraduate students to smoothly adjust to their new surroundings.  OSA collaborates with the Lingnan University Chinese Students and Scholars Association and senior-year international undergraduate students to provide pre-arrival enquiry services, arrival support services and tailor-made orientation activities for new non-local students.  These initiatives are designed to foster a sense of belonging and provide comprehensive assistance to new students right from the very beginning of their academic journey.

Moreover, new non-local students are invited to participate in the New Student Orientation (NSO), which provides an opportunity to  mingle with the local students and further adapt to university life.   Through the NSO, students can build connections, learn more about the Lingnan community, and receive guidance on academic and personal matters.

To further support non-local students, we also organise sharing sessions and networking activities for the non-local students.  These activities provide opportunities for non-local students to build stronger relationships with their peers while providing a platform for OSA to gather valuable information on their needs, concerns and experiences at Lingnan.  By collecting this information, OSA can improve its services and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for non-local students.

  • Lingnan Host Family Scheme

The Lingnan Host Family Scheme (LHFS) is a supportive programme designed to assist non-local undergraduate students.   Participating Lingnan staff are paired with non-local students, providing them with care, support and guidance.  By participating in this programme, students can experience the life and culture of Hong Kong while receiving help to adjust to university life with ease.  The programme provides an excellent opportunity for non-local students to integrate into university life and establish meaningful connections with members of the Lingnan community

University-wide Cultural Events

To promote cultural diversity on campus, OSA collaborates with different units to organise various campus-wide cultural events.  These events, such as the Chinese New Year Carnival, Thanksgiving Celebrations and International Day, serve to enrich students' exposure to diverse cultures and traditions on campus.
