The Liberal Arts Education of Lingnan University strives to educate students to act responsibly in the changing circumstances of Hong Kong, the region and the World. To accomplish this mission, students need to heighten their historical consciousness to cultivate substantial ability in reasoning, analyzing, organizing and communicating effectively. The study of the history of Hong Kong and South China is essential to the development of these abilities.

As a programme attached to the Department of History, the mission of the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme is to develop a research network among historians and institutions on the study of Hong Kong and South China. The programme also aims at establishing Lingnan University as a hub of Hong Kong and South China historical research.

The goals of the programme are:

  • To promote historical research relating to Hong Kong and South China. To carry out collaborate research projects and foster new partnerships.
  • To undertake historical research to meet the needs of Hong Kong community in the 21st century.
  • To develop new approaches to undergraduate education as well as postgraduate research training.
  • To use the Programme to assist in training students in historical research.
