Upgrade of Wi-Fi Infrastructure in Students’ Hostels

In spite of the particularly difficult situations due to COVID-19 pandemic, the upgrade of Wi-Fi infrastructure in Student Halls A-H had been completed successfully in Summer 2022.

A major element of the upgrade of the Wi-Fi System is the installation of In-room Wi-Fi Access Points in each student’s bedroom. It can greatly improve the strength and even coverage of wireless signal inside the bedrooms. Moreover, students will now enjoy the high-performance Wi-Fi system with the new Wi-Fi 6 standard when staying in these student halls.

The new Wi-Fi system utilizes the Wi-Fi 6 standard.  ITSC has performed some testing and found that there are improvements in latency, speed and stability when you are using the appropriate mobile devices.

To enjoy the above improvements and throughput of the new Wi-Fi 6 infrastructure, it is essential for your mobile devices to support the 5GHz frequency so that they can be connected to Wi-Fi SSID “LU-Advanced”. Only the more recent versions of mobile devices will support the 5GHz frequency, you are strongly advised not to use some legacy smartphones, tablets or laptop computers which do not support 5GHz. These legacy devices can still be connected to the SSID “LU” that is on 2.4GHz only and thus the performance is not as good as those connected to “LU-Advanced”.

In the meantime, ITSC is still fine-tuning the Wi-Fi Access Points and the backend system. If you experience poor performance at any particular location in hostels, please contact ITSC via [email protected] and report the problem with details such as the date, time and specific access problem scenario at your earliest convenience. ITSC will work with the supplier to explore the issue and solve it as quickly as possible.
