University Assembly
The University Assembly is a signature event organised at least once a year to complement the academic programmes of our liberal arts education. Luminaries of diverse backgrounds are invited to share their experience and exchange views with our students enabling them to widen their perspectives and keep abreast of the community’s development and concerns.

Search for Fundamental Elements of Nature
On 2 November, the University Assembly, hosted by LU President Prof. S. Joe QIN, invited Prof. TING, Samuel Chao Chung, the Nobel Laureate in Physics to speak on the topic “Search for Fundamental Elements of Nature”. Prof. Ting not just shared his profound insights, but also introduced his current research on physics “The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station”. Following his enlightening presentation, Prof. Ting engaged in a stimulating dialogue hosted by the President with the students, left the audience inspired, fostering a deep curiosity to further unravel the mysteries of the universe, and passing on the spirit of scientists to the next generation. He emphasised the importance of experimentation and curiosity, “Achievements in this world are driven by curiosity about nature”.
The University Assembly witnessed an overwhelming response, with over 800 students from Lingnan University, Yan Chai Hospital No.2 Secondary School, and their staff and guests.

The Palace of Established Happiness – Restoring a Garden in the Forbidden City
The Garden, in the northwest quarter of the Forbidden City, was commissioned by Qing Emperor Qianlong in 1742, and burned down in 1923 when the deposed emperor Puyi was still living in the Forbidden City.
For three-quarters of a century, the incinerated garden was forgotten under a pile of rubble, and it was not until 2005, when the first large-scale reconstruction project inside the Forbidden City since the early 20th century, begun in 1997 and fully supported by the CHF, was accomplished, that the world could see and appreciate the beauty of this cultural heritage, Qianlong’s favourite retreat, once decorated with exquisite pavilions, weathered rocks, sunken courtyards, winding galleries, and Qianlong’s art collection.
The President’s conversation with Chan and Harun and the Q&A session gave the audience of 700 students from Lingnan University, two affiliated secondary schools, and their staff and guests a thorough understanding of this interesting story and the CHF’s concern for China’s cultural heritage and legacy.
“I firmly believe that the preservation and inheritance of culture is crucial to the continuation of human civilisation,” President Cheng said. “By appreciating the country's cultural relics and ancient buildings, students can better understand its history and culture from ancient times to the present, as well as the transformation of society from tradition to modernity.”
Lingnan University will organise more cultural and artistic activities with Chinese characteristics, the President said, so that foreign students can recognise and value the splendid and beautiful Chinese culture, and exchanges will be promoted between China and the whole world.

Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Start-ups
Over the decade we’ve seen so many start-ups with brilliant and innovative ideas in Hong Kong. Some of them are still growing fast and strong while some of them are already out of the game. What is the essence of being an entrepreneur and how does it relate to a University and the University students?
In this University Assembly, Prof. Leonard K Cheng shared explained the facts about innovations, the new economy driven by information and communication technology and the roles to be played by a University. Two young and energetic co-founders and CEOs of successful start-ups, Mr. Steven Lam of Gogovan (now GOGOX) and Mr. Anthony So of OnGrad, shared with the audience their real-life stories of how a simple idea would grow into new icons in their respective industries.

Service Leadership: The 2nd Education Revolution in the 21st Century 廿一世紀服務領導新定向
“20th Century Manufacturing Management was about “doing things right”. 21st Century Service Leadership isn’t only about doing things right; it’s also about “doing the right things with the right heart” by Po Chung.
Societies everywhere are moving rapidly from the Manufacturing Age to the Service Age. Hong Kong has been at the forefront of the transformation to service with 97% of the working population in service roles.
“Competence, Character and Care”, these three key elements for successful service, are intertwined, coming as a package into the workplace to perform the service in the 21st Century.
