Subsite Background

Internship/ Part-time Job

No Objection Letter (NOL)

Non-local students will receive a “No Objection Letter” (NOL)  from the Hong Kong Immigration Department along with their student visa.  This letter, granted by the Director of Immigration, allows non-local students to take up internships, part-time on-campus employment or summer jobs during their studies in Hong Kong.  Generally, non-local students with the NOL won’t need to submit separate applications when taking up part-time on-campus employment and summer jobs.  The NOL is an important document and should be kept safely for future reference.

Employment Restriction for Non-local Students

Non-local full-time degree-seeking students whose study is not less than one academic year may take up internships, on-campus part-time jobs / summer jobs subject to the following conditions as set by the Immigration Department:

  1. The internships must be study / curriculum-related and be arranged or endorsed by the institutions they are studying in;

  2. The duration of the internship is up to one academic year, or one-third of the normal duration of the relevant full-time academic programme, whichever is the shorter; and

  3. There is no restriction on the nature of work, level of salary, location, number of working hours and employers for the internship arrangements.

  • On-campus part-time job / summer internship / summer employment

  2. Employment during summer months (between 1 June and 31 August, both dates inclusive) without limit to working hours and location.

  • Full-time non-local postgraduate students taking up part-time jobs

  1. To enhance learning and enrichment opportunities for international students, the Government announced that, starting from 1 November 2023, full-time non-local postgraduate students would be temporarily exempted from the restrictions on taking up part-time jobs.  The arrangement will be implemented on a trial basis for two years.  The Hong Kong Immigration Department will issue to eligible students through the institutions new NOLs setting out the relaxation.  Current students should contact their Faculties/Schools to obtain the updated NOLs.  Students approved of visas/entry permits on or after 1 November 2023 shall be issued with the updated NOLs.
