In the diverse landscape of education, a dedicated group of teachers at Lingnan University are being honoured for their commitment to the innovative use of technology and student-centred teaching pedagogies. Their creative approach has earned them prestigious Teaching Excellence Awards this year.

  • Winner of Individual Faculty Member category:
Prof Helen Han Peng, Department of Accountancy

Enhancing Legal Education with AI

Prof Helen Han Peng, Associate Professor of Teaching, Department of Accountancy, passionately believes that Lingnan must keep up with cutting-edge technologies as part of our learning innovation work.

“I strive to provide students with a solid understanding of legal knowledge by adopting AI robots to improve and stimulate teaching and student-centred learning,” she explains.

Prof Han also proposes and leads the minor in Law in Business programme, boosting the younger generation's legal and ethical awareness in today’s digital world. “I want to sharpen their critical thinking, reasoning capacity and problem-solving abilities so they can face multiple challenges in the fast-changing world.”

Prof Han equips students with important practical skills for success in the real-world.

One of her students is Chung Tin-yan in year 4, who is minoring in Law in Business. Taking all Prof Han's courses has been eye-opening for Chung, who says “Obviously the classes taught by Prof Han are extremely useful and interesting. I have learned about various legal concepts and the rules of running a company, as well as the roles of different directors.”

Chung used this knowledge in her job interview, impressing the interviewers and ultimately landing her dream job.

  • Winner of the Inaugural Faculty Member (Postgraduate) category:
Prof Martin Yick Ho-yin, Department of Operations and Risk Management

Incorporating tech elements

“In today's rapidly evolving digital era, I have incorporated elements of big data, programme coding, and social media into various courses and postgraduate programmes, such as Master of Science in Risk and Insurance Management (MScRIM) and Master of Science in Finance (MScFIN). This innovative approach has not only increased student involvement but also raised learning outcomes,” Prof Martin Yick Ho-yin, Associate Professor of Teaching, Department of Operations and Risk Management points out.

In this way, he arms Lingnan students with crucial professional skills in their liberal arts education, making them exceptionally competitive in a dynamic job market, and well able to tackle global challenges.

Hazel Yu, an MScRIM graduate with distinction now pursuing a PhD at Fudan University, praises Prof Yick for his pivotal role in her academic journey. He guided carefully and with clarity and enthusiasm through complex subjects.

“Prof Yick not only motivated me to carry out research projects but also offered unwavering support and constructive feedback on my work. His many industry connections opened doors to internships and job opportunities, and influence the professional trajectory of all his students.”

  • Winner of Team category:
Prof Man Chi-wah, Prof Ken Tso Hung-kit, Mr Tobby Kan Shiu-tao and Ms Emily Chan Yuen-ting,

Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries

A close-knit community

Teamwork and care are invaluable in achieving success. Prof Man Chi-wah, Acting Head and Associate Professor of Teaching, Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries (DACI), received the team category award with DACI members Prof Ken Tso Hung-kit, Mr Tobby Kan Shiu-tao and Ms Emily Chan Yuen-ting. Their student-centred approach sets them apart.

“Starting a new programme is no mean feat, and this recognition truly reflects the efforts we have put in over the past five years. It also highlights the strong support our Animation and Digital Arts programme (ADA) receives from the school and, most importantly, our students,” Prof Man says.

What sets teaching at Lingnan University apart? Our close-knit community. “As educators, we do not just interact with students in the classroom, we become peers and friends. This creates a nurturing environment where students feel encouraged to seek help when facing challenges.”

As for recent projects, the team have just revalidated the programme. Enhanced student learning experiences and exciting changes are on the horizon—including new courses and upgraded equipment—which will ensure students receive quality education.

  • Winner of Outstanding Teaching Award for Early Career Faculty Member category:
Prof Qi Suntong, Department of Marketing and International Business

The energy in teaching a small class

At Lingnan, the liberal arts education in intimate class settings sets the stage for excellence, and Prof Qi Suntong, Assistant Professor of Teaching, Department of Marketing and International Business, embodies these essential strengths.

“Teaching a small class enables me to give each student individual attention and to tailor their activities. I can create mini-experiments that actively involve every student.”

In the eyes of Sin Ka-man, a recent Marketing graduate with a BBA degree, Prof Qi's consistent teaching approach consistently offers clear explanations, accompanied by relevant examples, developing a profound understanding of the subject matter.

“Beyond Prof Qi’s exceptional teaching skills, her interactive teaching methods include class activities, elevating the learning experience, and helping me to understand the subject,” Sin says.

Reflecting on the significance of the teaching award, and grateful for the recognition from Lingnan and her students, Prof Qi says “This accolade means a lot to me as it recognises my past teaching achievements and gives me a greater sense of responsibility in my future career.”
