Mental Health and Wellness

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines “Health” as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Mental health is an integral and essential component of health.

What is mental health?
Do only people with mental problems or illnesses need to pay attention to mental health? In fact, mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities. According to WHO, mental health means that an individual:

  • realizes his or her own abilities
  • can cope with the normal stresses of life
  • can work productively
  • is able to make a contribution to his or her community

Mental health is fundamental to our collective and individual ability as humans to think, emote, interact with each other, earn a living and enjoy life. People with good mental health also have a lower risk of illness and longer life expectancy.

The “Act2fly” Programme

With funding from the Health Bureau's “Phase 2 of Mental Health Initiatives Funding Scheme”, LIFE launched two two-year mental health projects in May 2023. They are “ACT for LIFE: Psychological Acceptance and Activate a Meaningful Life Project” and “LIFE-Connect: Adventure-based Counselling for Mental Health Enhancement Project” The two projects were merged into the “Act2fly” programme which aims to enhance students' mental health through a series of activities that combine both physical and stationary elements, both external and internal in nature. The main objectives of the program are:

  • Strengthening students’ psychological capital as preventive and self-help measures
  • Facilitating students to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings
  • Facilitating student's social reconnection in real-life
  • Boosting up student's sense of accomplishment and self-esteem
  • Building student's resilience to adversity
  • Equipping students with skills to live their lives with more confidence and a greater sense of purpose
